Nacido en 1536, Juan de Mariana estudió artes y teología en la Universidad de Alcalá y, a los diecisiete años, ingresó en la recién aprobada Compañía de Jesús. Llamado a Roma por el segundo prepósito general jesuita, Diego Laínez, enseñó en esta ciudad, en Sicilia y en París, hasta regresar, en 1574, a España. Desde entonces y hasta su muerte, …

Nacido en 1536, Juan de Mariana estudió artes y teología en la Universidad de Alcalá y, a los diecisiete años, ingresó en la recién aprobada Compañía de Jesús. Llamado a Roma por el segundo prepósito general jesuita, Diego Laínez, enseñó en esta ciudad, en Sicilia y en París, hasta regresar, en 1574, a España. Desde entonces y hasta su muerte, en 1623, retirado en Toledo, se concentró en la labor pastoral y en el estudio. Fue consciente de los graves problemas teóricos asociados a las nuevas formas políticas y en ellos centró su atención. Cuatro siglos después, en su ciudad natal, Talavera de la Reina, se celebró el Congreso Internacional La actualidad del padre Juan de Mariana. Veintiún trabajos de filósofos, historiadores y economistas, de múltiples instituciones y países, que elogian y critican a Mariana; que le siguen con cuidadoso método o, como modernos cocineros, lo deconstruyen; que lo analizan en su tiempo y lo usan como pretexto para desarrollar sus inquietudes; que lo comparan con sus contemporáneos y rastrean su presencia en autores muy posteriores; que describen a vuelapluma su tiempo o buscan rastrear lo profundo de su intimidad o las paradojas de su circunstancia. En definitiva, gustos, aficiones y juicios diversos, como diverso fue, sin duda, el personaje que les ha interesado.
